Learn to build your own style of kizomba fusion, urban kiz and tarraxo with our intensive courses.
At NuKiz we offer regular courses, workshops and intensives for all levels, taught directly by our collective. Our style falls within kizomba fusion: we try to bring together the different ways of dancing kizomba (urban kiz, tarraxo, tarraxinha…) with very useful resources from other dances, such as tango, lindy hop or the new urban styles.
Our intensives are designed for people who are short on time, or who want to learn fast and hit the dance floor.
This format makes it much easier to get into dancing. Groups are formed at a similar level, ideal for losing your shyness, and when you face a social (a dance club night), it's nice to see your classmates and practise.
“I've seen kizomba videos and I love it, but I don't even know what the basic steps are. I want to learn to dance from the very beginning so I can get by on the dance floor and pass for someone who knows a thing or two.”
“Basics, saídas and vírgula: mastered. I hear the beat and off I go! But I want to do elaborate figures, syncopations and tricks so I can dance endless songs in a row and feel confident.”
“I already know how to dance. I want to perfect my technique, the leads and how to read them. Learn complex steps, footwork and fresh tricks for socials.”
“I want to go beyond dance steps. I'm interested in fine-tuning sensitivity, connection and the embrace.”
Content: mind-body work, douceur and tarraxa, relaxation exercises, intra- and interpersonal connection, role switching, dissociation and active listening.
Tarraxo from scratch.
NU.3 levels are designed for specific training. To join, you need to have mastered the previous NUs or have an intermediate level of urban or fusion.
Not at all. Just tell us which role you'd like to learn: leader if you'd rather interpret the music and turn it into steps, or follower if you'd rather let yourself be led and try to understand what the leader proposes. You can always repeat the workshops in the other role to round out your learning and enjoy the dance floor twice as much.
We like dancing in thin-soled sneakers (Victoria-style), but if you've mastered dancing and balancing in heels, that's not a problem. It is important to come freshly showered and bring a spare T-shirt. Keep in mind we'll be dancing close, and there are body odours we may not notice that can make the other person uncomfortable.
If you've never danced at all, great: you have no bad habits to work on or unlearn. Don't worry about feeling embarrassed, self-conscious or unsure, that's normal… and you should have seen us when we started!
If you've danced other disciplines before, that's great too, because your brain is already primed for dance and body work. We'll take all the technique you already have and adapt it to kizomba. We also come from other dances, so we'll “translate” for you what carries over from each discipline and what doesn't.
Classes follow a flexible format. Each group gets its own communication channel (WhatsApp, for example), and a few days before class we ask who's coming. That way we make sure the class is balanced (leader-follower), and if you can't come, you don't pay for that class.
Yes, as long as you let us know in advance so the group stays balanced, or if someone else in the class happens to want to switch too. In the social part, we encourage you to try it, loosen up and switch roles if you feel like it.
Our classes and intensives are for adults, so we consider 16 the minimum recommended age. As a rule there's no maximum, except for sessions where we work on drags, lifts (portés) or acrobatics.
No. We simply make clear the foundations our project and philosophy are built on. We start from inclusion, diversity and respect, and we steer clear of the traditional stereotypes that live on in scenes like dance. To sign up, all you need is an open mind, to choose the role or roles you want to learn, the will to learn, to challenge your mind and body, have fun and meet people.
